NATIONAL DAY OF SILENCE - APRIL 21
On Friday, April 21, 2017, many of our students and staff will observe the student-led National Day of Silence. This is an annual event when some students take a vow of silence to bring attention to the name calling, bullying and harassment that many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth face in schools. In SRVUSD, all students and staff have a right to a safe and healthy school environment. It is our obligation to promote mutual respect, tolerance, and acceptance on our campuses and, as adults, to always intervene and stop bullying and hateful comments.
The level of participation in the National Day of Silence will vary. Some students will choose to be silent all day; others will talk only in class but not in the halls; some will talk all day but wear a red t-shirt or another visible display of support; and others will choose to not participate at all. Students should not feel pressured to participate or not participate on the National Day of Silence.
Teachers are expected to carry-on as usual during class and are welcome to make a statement regarding the meaning of the National Day of Silence. Students are required to participate in class; if the planned lesson requires vocal participation, students should verbally contribute. However, teachers are asked to be thoughtful and sensitive as they create lessons plans for April 21.
